So, I decided to go ahead with the adoption, but since I didn't want to have the same situation occur with the girls being snotty, I decided to adopt 2 brothers.
These poor boys have been through hell! Frankie and Alfred are 2 of 10 adult male rats who were abandoned in the parking lot of a vet clinic in Palatine, IL. They were found crammed in a filthy 20 gallon aquarium, dirty, covered with lice, and suffering from respiratory infections. Fortunately, the kind people at the clinic were able to take them in temporarily until they could be brought to rescue. A very nice couple helped transport the boys to HVRR, where they were bathed, treated with Revolution, and put on medication.
I need to keep them quarantined for about 2 weeks, so I set up a separate cage for the boys. I lined the bottom with a towel, set up a litter box, put in a hammock and finished with food and water. While petting Freddie (Alfred), I noticed that Frankie decided to do some rearanging. Within 3 minutes, he put everything that wasn't nailed down into the litter box, curled up and went to sleep! I had to crack up - it was so cute, but also a little sad that he is so used to having no room that he put everything in such a small space...
Enjoy the pics!
